Social and Geographical Space Workshop > SEPTEMBER 07
The Workshop on Social and Geographic Space (SGS'07) aims to bring the social and the spatial disciplines together, to discover joint foundations in social and geographical network theory, and to integrate approaches for modelling spatial context and social behaviour. The Social and Geographical Space Workshop will run in conjunction with the major International Conference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT), Melbourne, 19-23 September 2007
Call for Papers and Participation in ARCNSISS Event > SGS' 07
The workshop below is organized as an ARCNSISS activity (although open to all researchers). The ARCNSISS is funding the participation of a limited number of participants (10-15 researchers; airfare, accommodation for two nights, workshop fees, meals for the day). Submitted papers undergo an international peer review, and preference for funding is given to applicants with accepted workshop papers. Participation in the following Conference on Spatial Information Theory is optional; of special interest might be the doctoral colloquium on Sunday.

AIMS AND SCOPE
==============
Social agents are embedded in both social structures and in geographical space. The combination of social and geographic space has often been neglected. With few exceptions, social network theory ignores geographic space, and artificial intelligence studies often assume local societies without sophisticated conceptualisations of social networks. Yet the multiple embeddedness of actors in both physical and social space has important implications for understanding social behaviour. In many related research areas, there is a growing recognition that associations between social structure and geographical nearness may affect social systems and social behaviours.
Research on the associations between social and geographic space occurs in disconnected scientific communities, including human geography, social network theory, and geographic agent-based simulation. The Workshop on Social Space and Geographic Space aims to bring the social and the spatial disciplines together, to discover joint foundations in social and geographical theory, and to integrate approaches for modelling spatial context and social behaviour.
TOPICS
======
Authors are invited to submit original manuscripts that demonstrate current research in areas that relate to associations between social networks/social structure and geographic space. The workshop solicits novel papers on a broad range of topics that relate to these associations, including but not limited to:
* mobile gaming
* models for networks in physical space
* modelling recreation behaviour
* social cohesiveness within spatially distributed communities
* modelling behaviour of wildlife populations
* market systems embedded socially and physically (e.g. labour markets)
* modelling migration or gentrification in urban systems
* models for segregation and desegregation across large scale communities
* ad-hoc ride sharing in urban transportation
PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION
================================
Authors should submit electronically a full paper of maximal 12 pages in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science format to the workshop via the COSIT'07 paper submission system. The papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of expression. Accepted papers must be presented at the workshop by one of the authors to be published in the conference proceedings. Selected best papers, after extension, will be published in a special issue of the International Journal in Geographical Information Science.

WORKSHOP VENUE
The workshop along with the COSIT'07 will be held at the Melbourne Business School in Mt Eliza, Melbourne, Australia. The venue is located above the cliffs of Port Phillip Bay, with wonderful views, an English park landscape, and a private beach. Mount Eliza is about one and a half hour's drive from Melbourne's international airport Tullamarine (MEL). A shuttle service will operate from the airport to the conference site at Mt Eliza. Melbourne is well-connected, with direct flights from major cities around the world. September is low season for traveling to Australia and several airlines offer budget tickets. The latest travel and conference information will appear on the COSIT'07 web site http://www.cosit.info as it becomes available.
REGISTRATION
To register for the SGS' 07 Workshop click on the Register Now button below.
Beyond the one day workshop, and on their own expenses, participating ARCNSISS members are welcome to:
• participate in COSIT and present their research to an international audience;
• participate in other pre-conference workshops;
• participate in the Doctoral Colloquium, a forum for PhD students to discuss their research.
